Daria Sharenkova in front of a painted facade

2023 — 2024 · Istanbul, Bukhara, Sochi

My practice grows out of first-hand research into the urban environment while travelling.

I look for and document the visual code particular to each place — from capital megacities to small towns.

What I record are the states and moods of nocturnal space.

A night trading street in Kadıköy, Istanbul: shuttered stalls, red awnings and a lone figure in a checked cloak

The pile-up of Istanbul's markets, the climbs and descents. It is frightening to walk here alone at night, but that is how I get to know and understand the city. I like watching its rhythm and its condition.

A park in Sochi at night: pale tree trunks against a violet-blue ground, long shadows stretching across the earth

The work came out of a night walk through Sochi.

The generalised silhouettes of rampant southern vegetation balance between nostalgia, curiosity and a faint unease.

The mud-brick lanes of old Bukhara at night, a figure in a skullcap in the foreground and blue sky above the roofs

The plainness and expressiveness of the old town at night sank me into the time of the Bukhara Khanate.

The dark swallows everything superfluous: the signage, the shops selling Coke and the other symbols of globalisation.

The Ark fortress in Bukhara at night, lit in electric pink, with silhouettes of people on a platform at the foot of the walls

When I was in Bukhara a night marathon was being held, and the whole fortress was lit in electric pink.

Only the light gives away the new age of an ancient city.

Levkas

Every work has a second version in levkas, the icon-painting technique.

The ground gives an interesting texture, and the pigments make the works more expressive and more painterly.
